Kuje Prison Break: ISWAP Claims responsibility

In a 38-second video released by the Islamic State in West Africa Province, the group claimed they were responsible for the Kuje Prison attack.

The group released the video on Wednesday night, showing how some of its members gained access to the prison.

The video revealed that the terrorists shot sporadically before entering the prison. The video was released on Wednesday on the news channel of the Islamic State, written in Arabic. The write-up goes, “Fighters of Islamic State attacked Kuje prison in Abuja yesterday and succeeded in releasing many prisoners.”

An older man and young men were seen in the video shouting while claiming responsibility for the attack. Many fighters can be seen marching while vehicles and buildings are on fire.

Reports revealed that four inmates died, and 879 escaped during the attack.

Abubakar Umar, the Service Public Relations Officer, said the attackers forced their way into the prison facilities with explosives via the main entrance. They destroyed the fence also in the process.

According to him, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps official attached to the Custodial Centre was killed, while three officials of the NCoS escaped with serious injuries.

A total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the unfortunate attack. As of the time of this report, 443 have been recaptured, 551 inmates are currently in custody, and 443 inmates are still at large.

“Four inmates are dead and 16 inmates sustained various degree of injuries and are being treated at the moment. However, efforts are ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates, ” Umar said.

Finally, he confirmed that Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and other VIPs held in the facility did not escape.
