Impeachment: Oyo Deputy Governor kicked out of office

On Monday, Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, was impeached by the House of Assembly of the state.

Impeaching the deputy governor came from the recommendation of the seven-man panel that was set up to investigate Rauf Olaniyan over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Last week, the panel was put together by the Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola, to investigate at least five allegations in a petition against the embattled deputy governor. The impeachment will commence immediately, according to the assembly.

The committee’s report was presented during Monday’s plenary by the Majority leader of the house, Hon Sanjo Adedoyin, who revealed that the Deputy Governor was found guilty of all the allegations against him.

The panel’s recommendations were presented at the plenary, and all the 23 PDP lawmakers present voted to support the recommendations.

Olaniyan was elected into office in 2019 with Governor Seyi Makinde under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party; however, specific issues came up between him and the governor over time.

This year, the issues between the governor and deputy degenerated further to become virtually irreconcilable, especially when Rauf Olaniyan decamped from PDP to APC.
