What ingredients should you look out for in a moisturiser this season?
The weather is getting drier than it has ever been all year round because of the harmattan. A common piece of advice is to moisturise your skin but that seems very vague.
Here are the most important ingredients in any moisturising lotion.
1. Glycerin
Glycerin is a humectant which means it draws water into the skin. It has no colour or smell and helps with skin inflammation and healing.
2. Hyaluronic acid
This is also a humectant that draws moisture into the skin and reduces the appearance of cracks that comes with extremely dry skin.
3. Shea butter
Even raw shea butter is extremely moisturising. It reduces dryness in the skin and hydrates the skin.
4. Ceramides
Ceramides reduce inflammation, flaking and skin dryness. They prevent the skin from losing water and leave it supple, hydrated, and protected.
5. Vitamin E
This is naturally occurring and may be gotten from food but it is also perfect for the skin. Vitamin E can be found in almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil and jojoba oil.
Vitamin E protects the skin from free radicals that might harm it and it also hydrates the skin.
Although petroleum and parrafin wax moisturises the skin, they can make some people sweat.
